Fed: Bracks says Howard not taking health funding seriously

Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS says Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD is failing to take healthfunding issues seriously.

All states and territories except the ACT have refused to sign five-year public hospitalfunding agreements with the commonwealth.

The states want the issue discussed at today's Council of Australian Governments meeting, but Mr HOWARD says the commonwealth's $42 billion funding offer is final.

Mr BRACKS says Mr HOWARD is treating the future of patient care like it's a routinepolitical stoush.

He told ABC radio that somehow the prime minister has lost sight of the task of providingenough resources to treat more patients in the community.

Mr BRACKS denies state premiers would walk out of the COAG meeting if health is notplaced on the top of the agenda.

The states will face financial penalties if they don't sign the agreements by Sunday.
